When the Heat Wave Hits Your Yowling Brain

When the Heat Wave Hits Your Yowling Brain

The L.A. heat has been crazy. Blistering temperatures of 100° to 119° have fried the southland. I tend to get irritable or even frustrated when trying to work through these yowling temps. My brain becomes too hot to think clearly. And yet, the heat teaches me something. It reminds me of that “hot spot” in the creation process: I have “nothing” yet have to produce “something.” I pass through this sweltering unknown zone every time I create something new–whether it’s a course, poem,...

Cram-Bam…Miracle? Embrace Yowling

Do you hop from project to project? Does your mind nibble in a meadow of great ideas without finishing one? Do you lack satisfaction when you finally do finish? You may have a cram-bam approach and not know it. This means you ignore your yowling and wait until the last minute to start. Then you procrastinate, try again, abandon all effort, try again, get even more frustrated, and then try to internalize and utilize months…even weeks…of information in just a short time. If you take the cram-bam-exam approach to your studies, you...

A Yowling Creator’s Cupcake Bouquet

I just returned from a meeting, where a friend of mine brought in a photo of a cupcake bouquet she created for a baby shower this past weekend. My friend, Esther, doesn’t really see herself as a yowling creator. She probably doesn’t even know what one is. Still, Esther is a yowling creator even though she doesn’t realize it. I am so excited to share her story with you. Your Yowling Creation Is An Expression of the Soul Esther was just baking cupcakes. From her point of view, she was simply expressing the love she feels for...

Rest & Its Yowling Creator Benefits

I just returned from a refreshing stint in Santa Barbara. It has become one of my favorite places to write. I escape the fast pace of L.A. and retreat to the serene green and invigorating coastal breezes of someplace out of the way. I like it, because the change in scenery inspires me. I need it, to shed the stress of meeting clients’ deadlines and my own creative demands. I welcome it, because it fills my creative cup. If you’re having trouble creating, I recommend rest. It can help you reconnect with your creative self. If you...

Yowling Creators 2012: Stepping Out to Connect Friday, May 18

I’m so excited. Once again, a whole new group of my Creative Writing students are taking their first step of freedom to connect with an audience at a Yowling Creator cafe. It’s all happening Friday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Fuller’s Travis Lounge, located on the corner of Oakland and Walnut in Pasadena. Like many first-time yowling creators, my students felt a bit shy. They thought they had nothing to say and were even nervous to share their work with one another in our early workshops. But all that has changed. Now...

Your Yowling Creator Spirit

Your Yowling Creator Spirit

A depleted spirit guarantees a depleted soul. When we create, we tend to focus our attention on what we think, how we feel, and what we do. But the role of the spirit for a yowling creator is a very important part of the creation process. Before we can conscientiously create, we need to know our state. Understanding our spiritual side and human identity feeds and nutures us in the journey to finish our task. Your Yowling Starts in Your Spirit The spirit nourishes the soul. For this reason, the apostle Paul prayed to God and issued this...

Yowling Creators Need Spiritual Release

Yowling Creators Need Spiritual Release

Often the creation process can feel like a bubbling brook. It either splashes along happily or clogs with obstructions. Too many obstructions can paralyze the flow. Yowling from our soul brings spiritual release and dislodges us from such paralysis. It frees us from never-ending circles of despair and propels us forward into the hope that what we’re setting out to do we can achieve. Without fluid spirituality, creative streams cannot flow. They dam up and so do our ideas. This is what I call “creator’s crunch.” Moving beyond...

Beyond Writer’s Block: Yowling Creator’s Crunch

Are you tied up in knots? This is what creator’s crunch feels like. Writers experience it as “writer’s block.” Business people say they’re “stumped.” Artists just scream and call it “frustration.” Many blame their “muse,” sadly whining that it went on vacation. In reality, creator’s crunch is much more than simple writer’s block. It’s the block that we experience as a yowling creator. You know you’re facing creator’s crunch, when you think or...

Thesis: Your Guiding Light

Thesis: Your Guiding Light

Often we associate a “thesis” with writing papers. But a thesis is more than an overarching sentence for an academic paper. It’s the guiding light for any project. It makes our creation vibrantly come alive. As the third stage of the Yowling Creator’s Way, the thesis concentrates our energy and focuses a creation so it fully reaches its potential.         THESIS = TOPIC + ILLUMINATING IDEA Businesses have their tag lines. Organizations have their mission statements. Churches have their vision...

Do You Have a Dream in Your Yowling Creator Spirit?

Do You Have a Dream in Your Yowling Creator Spirit?

Many of us keep our yowling creator dreams a secret, because we’re afraid they’ll never happen. In our spirit, we can fear failure. When we finally do risk to take concrete steps to birth our passion, the dream goes public. Given the spiritual and emotional dynamic of the creation process, this can complicate how we perceive our own progress. However, you can take advantage of this new stage of development. Embrace your freedom to connect with others who can help you stay motivated and engaged in your creator’s way, no matter...
