Yowling Creators 2012: Stepping Out to Connect Friday, May 18

I’m so excited. Once again, a whole new group of my Creative Writing students are taking their first step of freedom to connect with an audience at a Yowling Creator cafe. It’s all happening Friday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Fuller’s Travis Lounge, located on the corner of Oakland and Walnut in Pasadena. Like many first-time yowling creators, my students felt a bit shy. They thought they had nothing to say and were even nervous to share their work with one another in our early workshops. But all that has changed. Now they’re excited to try out their yowling creator talent on a new audience.

Why Am I Yowling with Excitement?

I’m excited because these yowling creators have the opportunity to get validated for their efforts. Here what Nikki says, “When I entered the Yowling Creator Creative Writing course I was so worried about how to gather my ideas and make sense of them. I never wrote creatively before. Making a meaningful composition seemed almost impossible, but I have quickly come to appreciate the value of a good brainstorm.”

You’ll also meet German, Jeanneathe, Elena, and Sandra. So far, they’ve only connected in Yowling Creator workshops. At the start, it felt like a big risk to share what was on their mind. Over the past few months through creative sweat and hard work, they’ve labored together to polish their pieces. They have formed a community. They now have someone to share their jitters.

“When we get stuck at this time it’s comforting knowing that in this process we do not have to be alone,” says Elena. “We have The Yowling Creator Way to help us find a way to write our creations, collecting any pieces in our minds and putting them together like a puzzle.”

Power of Yowling Creators Connecting

I’m also excited because I’ve seen the power of yowling creators connecting in the past. Here are some photos of previous events:

Food, fun, coffee, cider, and tons of laughter! The new yowling creators are always surprised at how much people enjoy their creations, particularly because most don’t see themselves as creative in the traditional sense. Yowling Creators ages 12 to 70 have participated, and they all say the same thing:

If you’re local, join us Friday, May 18, and connect with other Yowling Creators!

When we risk and step out in freedom to connect with others, something significant happens. We receive and provide mutual encouragement with fellow creators. We help ourselves to stay engaged in pursuing our passion, dream, or goal. And even if a response is not as positive as we’d hoped, we know we can learn what to do differently–which ultimately makes our work even better.

  1. Sandra funes says:

When I started the creative writing class, I was terrified. I had never created anything and I didn’t believe on having a creative spot in my brain, but after the first class, all those negative thoughts went away. Thanks to Mrs. Sandoval for the encouragement, for the way she teaches the class, for sharing her knowlege with us. If you are planning on taking the creative writing class, don’t be afraid, you will be in good hands.

  2. Maria Elena Lopez says:

In the beginning for me it was very difficult, I was shy, nervous, I don’t know much English, especially when it comes to writing. But after practicing, studying, completing my whole home work, I felt that I have grown as not only as a person, and have improved my grammar, my writing and the way as I write. Through much hard work, I feel that my professor and my classmates have really helped me and take part, in my work and in my improvement.
